About Bishop Auckland

Bishop Auckland is a push town and civil parish in County Durham, north east England, 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Darlington, 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Durham and 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Crook, at the confluence of the River Wear in the way of being of its tributary the River Gaunless. At the 2001 census, Bishop Auckland had a population of 24,392.

Much of the town’s at the forefront history surrounds the Bishops of Durham and the creation of a hunting lodge, which forward-looking became Auckland Castle, the main residence of the Bishops of Durham. This colleague with the Bishops of Durham is reflected in the first part of the town’s name.
